Victims of this propaganda end up literally being 'cannon-fodder' (UK metaphorical meaning: useless idiot). If the poppy sellers were also openly anti-war, then I would buy one. The ones who need to 'remember' are the politicians who invariably put soldiers unnecessarily in harm's way, but though they have the memory of the pachiderm, they've also got the skin of one, and the smell too.
